Open enrollment is a period of time each year when you can obtain or switch health insurance for you and your family. Outside the open enrollment period, you generally can select a health insurance plan only if you qualify for a special enrollment period.

The renewal and open enrollment period for Covered California health insurance plans occurs each year between November 1 and January 31.
It is important to take a look at your health plan during open enrollment as options and rates in your area could change. You may also qualify for a different amount of financial help, especially if things like your address, income, and family size have changed during the year.
After January 31, you can enroll in a Covered California plan only if you have a life event that qualifies you for a special enrollment period. The special enrollment period allows you to change your health plan or purchase insurance within 60 days of a qualifying life event. Each year, your Medicare open enrollment period is October 15 - December 7. During this time, you can switch Medicare Advantage plans, or enroll for the first time.
When you’re first eligible for Medicare, you have a seven-month Initial Enrollment Period to sign up for Part A (hospital insurance) and/or Part B (medical insurance and services). For example, if you’re eligible for Medicare when you turn 65, you can sign up during the 7-month period that:
- Begins three months before the month you turn 65
- Includes the month you turn 65
- Ends three months after the month you turn 65
